Hi guys, in my diary today, I like us to look at a critical document that introduces us to the official world. Of course,
you know am talking about; no other but your
CV or Resume. Ideally, a carefully structured CV or Resume in a Nigerian terrain should generate you job interviews as well as present you as a good contender amongst fierce competitors. This being said, it is becoming alarming and annoying to see some so called “Nigerian graduates” ignore the time and research requirements to know what is trending.
I can authoritatively tell you that ninety-five
percent of graduates who reside on your street and those in your environment
are having thesame pattern of CV or Resume right now! My proof is, if you have
a cybercafé on your street or environs, there are tendencies that all the
identifiable graduates (in that environment) use the café for computer works (since
personal computer or laptop are luxuries-LOL!). Now, do you know that what most
of them do is; walk to the cybercafé, give the attendant some cash to help them
edit a CV or Resume template on their system. The attendant in-turn edits only
the biodata section of a quark-looking and ill-structured template already
saved on their system and then print it for such fellow. This is what the
attendant does for anyone who visits the business centre for CV or Resume works.
At the end of the day, everyone in that vicinity eventually possess thesame CV
or Resume with only the biodata section being different.
If you invest your time and research prowess to
create a befitting and personalised CV or Resume by studying the trends before
it becomes popular, you are sure to have the capacity to command and stimulate the
attention you deserve from employers.
The list below basically consists of key
items Nigerian employers currently bear-in-mind immediate they pick you CV or
Resume;
1.
Your
leadership/personal brand testimonial
Your CV or resume is the paper replica of
you. Its look and content give the employer a thousand idea of your personality.
You are most likely not going to be there when it will be streamlined; hence,
you should learn to summarily pitch your selling points, vigour and essential
leadership asset which depict your distinctive value propositions.
2.
How you have
been able to properly format the document
Mobile phones are trending nowadays and there
is a very high tendency that your employer may streamline your CV or Resume
along many others on his/her blackberry or android phone. Note that mobile
devices view documents differently unlike the PC. Paragraphs, text features, alignments and justifications, table format and textboxes etc. must be given
attention. After all these are verified to be perfect, you then download the
document on a blackberry and then android phone to get the mobile view of the document.
3.
How concise,
precise yet effective the document is
It is popularly believed that Nigerians do
not like reading especially when it is perceived to be too long for a common
sense making. Without disputing this fact, I will say majority of us have this
trait-we hate reading epistles! Therefore, you will agree with me that your CV
or Resume need to have covered a lot of key points before the reader gets bored
and tired. Just be brief on Leadership Creativities, Success Summary, Professional
Profile and Biography etc. In
fact, your CV or Resume need to be void of repetitions and may necessarily not
have to look like an Oxford Advance Learners’ Dictionary to make sense.
4.
Your expertise,
experience and exposure
Yes! I remember I made mention of this in my 10 reasons why you are a half-baked graduate post.
Frankly speaking, nobody wants to associate with a timid and boring personality.
It is believed that Nigerian employers spend more time in this section of your
CV or Resume to be thrilled. They expect to be ‘knocked off the feet’ by what
other things you know, can do, or have done in the past which can be maximized
when you eventually join their team. In fact, this is where we need to see you
write about your competitive advantages as a team member.
